web-based browser software is not your best choice...

many types of medical billing software and assertions about “web-based”

A server is just like a desktop computer, but it can be located anywhere in
the world. You run software stored on a server by communicating with them
over the Internet, but the software performs and acts (multi-tasking) just
like it was running on your own desktop. You do not use a browser, because
you literally operate the software just as if it resided on your own
machine. You connect to the server through communication utility that comes
free with your Windows Operating System (Remote Desktop Connection, also
known as RDP). One of the advantages of a server, is that many people can

software are both types of “Internet accessible” software. Both work over
the Internet, but only web-based systems require you to access them with a
browser, which can have its own complications. Server-based systems are accessed
via the Internet, but they run on their own (just like they do on your desktop)
